Dr. Fisher is an infectious disease physician. He earned his MD at the Medical College of Virginia (Virginia Commonwealth University) In Richmond VA in 1969 and was President of the Freshman Class. He trained at the University of Cincinnati and the Medical College of Virginia He joined the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia in 1977 and has more than 100 scientific publications.

He is the recipient of 70 excellence-in-teaching awards from the medical students including 24 Educator of the Year Awards and has been recognized internationally as a medical educator. He has been married to the former Peggy Ballance for 48 years and they have six children and 15 grandchildren.
